Junior Golfer Q&A – Sia, 5 years old, Leicestershire

At just 5 years old, Sia is two years into her golf journey and loving every minute! We caught up with her to learn more about her love of golf.

Tell us about yourself and what you like doing besides golf?
I like learning to play on the Piano and going to Bollywood Dance classes.

How did you first get into golf and how old were you when you first started playing?
I use to go to the driving range with my dad on the weekends, when I was 2.5 years old, my dad bought me an Iron and I slowly started hitting balls. My dad taught me until I turned 4. Then during lockdown I joined the juniors at Leicestershire Golf course.

What’s your first golfing memory?
Going on the driving range and being able to sit in the buggy and collecting all the balls on the driving range.

Where do you currently play?
Do you use the driving range or a course? I currently play at Leicestershire Golf course on the course. I also use different driving Ranges I also have lessons at Lingdale Golf Course, though I spend most of my time at Leicestershire Golf course.

[parent] How does golf positively impact on you as a family?
This is time I get to spend with my daughter and I believe golf has made our bond much stronger. Sia wants to play golf most weekends and now she wants to teach her 3 year old brother how to play too.

[parent] What advice would you give to other parents whose children have shown an interest in golf?
I say that getting children into golf at a young age is fun for them and this also encourages socialising with other children outside an academic setting. Also it gets children outdoors and they get to make new friends. Golf is good for their development to as it teaches patience and develops new skills.

What’s in the bag?
I use Nike Golf clubs which are Yellow and Black. Iove my driver & putter the most. They were gifted to me from my dads friends in the USA, we have all brand new Nike Sets for when my brother and I get older to use. I cannot wait to use them.

How often do you currently practice and do you have a coach?
I practice twice a week, I have 2 coaches Peter Faragher @ Leicestershire  and Evie Carter who runs the USKidsGolf in the East Midlands.

What’s the best shot you’ve ever hit?
25 yards using my 7 iron and I was awarded a US kids Golf badge.

[parent & Sia] Proudest moment?
Being featured on the USKidsgolf Instagram page for accomplishing a step in the US Kids Golf Pathway and being awarded my first badge.

What are your ambitions in golf?
To play golf for fun and eventually enter a juniors golf competition.

What’s the best thing about golf?
Being able to play golf with other juniors making new friends.

Who would you most like to meet in the world of golf?
Lexi Thompson  and Megha Ganne

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us.  It’s great to see someone so talented enjoy the game so much.  We look forward to seeing your game develop in the coming years and wish you all the success.
